In addition to being the only engine in the 40 HP class with DOHC performance, the DF40A is the only one with an oil-bathed, maintenance-free timing chain, which increases the outboard's longevity and ease of maintenance. With designs that are lighter and more compact than their predecessors, Suzuki's Lean Control System enhances fuel efficiency with greater displacements for increased power and performance. The Suzuki Troll Mode System is another feature of the new DF40A engines. At the 2011 Miami Boat Show, Suzuki Marine received the NMMA Innovation Award for the DF40A/DF50A from the Boating Writers of America.

Mechanically Efficient DOHC 12-Valve Engine

This outboard is powered by Suzuki’s proven in-line three-cylinder, 12-valve engine, the only DOHC powerhead in their class. With four valves per cylinder and an air intake system tuned for high-rpm efficiency, this engine delivers strong performance across the powerband. Suzuki engineers also redesigned key components, including a more efficient oil pump, to reduce mechanical loss. The result is smoother lubrication, improved fuel economy, and dependable long-term performance.

Unlike other outboards in their class, this outboard features a timing chain instead of a belt. Running in an oil bath, the chain is self-adjusting and maintenance-free, providing boaters with years of dependable service and long-term durability.

Tilt Limit System

The tilt limit system safeguards against damage that can occur from excessive outboard tilting. Designed as both a tilt limiter and trim sender, it uses a step-free, continuous limiter that adapts easily to nearly any boat setup, ensuring safe operation and flexible installation.
